As John K Zinn so well put it, it is:
“Paying attention, on purpose, non-judgmentally, in the present moment”
Mindfulness practice is maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, breath and surrounding environment. It is a sort of open monitoring done through a non-judgmental lens. Our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. By practicing mindfulness, the body, mind and nervous system benefit. It helps cultivate a emotional self regulation and resilience. In my opinion mindfulness is a foundational piece to one’s overall health and wellness. Mindfulness can also be called awareness, consciousness or meditation and is can be practiced in various forms of training and modalities.
“Mindfulness isn’t difficult, we just have to remember to do it.”

*Mindfulness practices we know today evolved from ancient wisdom and traditions and have very deep roots. Although we are approaching mindfulness in a secular way, this story is compelling and beautiful.
Buddhist monks have a story where they ask students
What is the core teaching of the Buddha?
Answer: An Appropriate response.
Mindfulness is also a practice in responsiveness. A practice in non-attachment which makesus more engaged, present and responsive. In sum it is beautiful result of both the ability tohone in & focus and be very connected to ourselves. This is accompanied by an ability tokeep in mind the bigger picture and connect and respond to others from more grounded, clear and compassionate place.
In a nutshell, mindfulness not only reduces stress but also gently builds an inner strength so that future stressors have less impact on our happiness and physical wellbeing.
